How to Find the Task Folder on a Blackberry
Productivity Base Article Number: PB625
Introduction

Some Blackberries appear not to have a Task folder. When this happens it is usually because the Task folder is located somewhere obscure. This article suggests ways to change the Blackberry display theme so that the Task folder is readily visible, or to find the Task folder and move it to somewhere more convenient.

Full Details

The default layout of a Blackberry's display is determined by which display theme is currently in use. The theme determines, among other things:

  • the background "wallpaper" on the display
  • which icons are used for which functions and folders
  • which captions are used to describe which functions and folders
  • how you access the menus of icons
  • where the Task folder is

You can change the layout of the icons and folders to customise a theme to your needs.

If a Blackberry is reset, the default theme is reinstated and any customisations you may have made will be lost.

One way to make the Task folder visible is to select a different theme - one which has the Task folder positioned where it is readily visible. The alternative approach, if you do not want to change themes, is to find and reposition the Task folder.

Change themes

You can view the available themes and select a theme by choosing "Options", then "theme".

Exactly how you do this depends on which theme you are currently using. The icon used to denote "Options" and the caption used to describe that icon varies according to the theme which is in use.

For example the "Vodafone Today - White" theme has most of the icons available via the menu key, uses a crossed spanner and screwdriver icon for the "Options" folder and calls it "Settings". The "BB Dimension Icon" theme has most of the icons visible directly on the display, uses a single spanner icon for the "Options" folder and calls it "Options".

Some themes are provided by Blackberry and some may be provided by your airtime provider. It is not practicable to give a list of themes and their characteristics. Some trial and error may be necessary to find the right icon.

Find and Move the Task folder

To find the Task folder, navigate through the set of available icons using the scrolling ball. If a full set of icons is not readily visible, try pressing the menu key. If a Task folder is not immediately visible, it will be inside another folder. In our experience it is always either immediately visible, or in a sub-folder called "Tools and Accessories".

Click on the sub-folder to open it. Scroll to select the Task folder. Press the menu key and select "move". Once "move" has been clicked, the icon can be moved about using the scrolling ball. Move the icon to the "Move Up" position, which is usually in the top left corner of the folder, then click to end "move" mode.

The Task folder will now be visible in the top layer of your folder structure. If desired, select the Task folder and enter "move" mode again to adjust the position of the Task folder icon.
